Writing Curriculum for Emerging Writers
The SBC team is in the process of developing writing curriculum for emerging writers. These slides cover spelling of sight words and fundamental grammar rules, and they help children learn to differentiate between facts and opinions.
While these slides were built with children in grades 1-3 in mind, they can be useful for any emerging writer who is looking to brush up their writing skills!
Session#1: Spelling new sight words, capitalization rules and exercises, introduction to opinions and facts
Session#2: Review sight words and spell new ones, write questions, review capitalization, review opinions and facts
Session#3: Talking about feelings, review sight words and learn one new word, review question words, learn title capitalization, identify opinions
Session#4: Learn to spell some days of the week, write sentences, review title capitalization, identify more opinions and facts
Session#5: Learn to spell the other days of the week, write sentences, introduce family titles, begin writing opinion sentences with days of the week
Session#6: Use knowledge of days of the week to talk about plans for the weekend, learn to spell and use seasons in sentences, review capitalization rules, and play Kahoot
Session#7: Learn what nouns and verbs are and practice how to use them in sentences.
Session#8: Review nouns and verbs and introduce the concept of past, present, and future.
Session#9: Introduce verb tense changes for simple past, present, and future tenses.
Session#10: Review all concepts learned in past writing pods by using Kahoot and a crossword puzzle.
Session#11: learn about personal pronouns writing exercises using personal pronouns
Session#12: new sight words, learn about adding –ed and –d to past tense of a verb, add –ing to present tense of the verb, add will to the future tense of a verb.
Session#13: new sight words, learn about irregular verbs, and writing exercises on irregular verbs.
