Where students can go for additional tutoring
There are countless resources available to NYC students and families. In this article, we are highlighting a couple of resources that students can use on an ad-hoc basis. Check out the following sites/ articles to find programs that require a greater commitment:
Teacher office hours
Middle and high school teachers have a set time period where they meet with students who drop into receive support. This information is normally available on:
Syllabus
School website
Google Classroom
If the student can’t find out the teacher’s office hours, they should email the teacher directly. The same goes for if the student is unable to make the teacher’s office hour but would like to schedule a specific window to meet with him/ her.
School peer tutoring
Many schools offer an after-school peer tutoring program for students who want help on their homework. Help the child reach out to the school guidance counselor to find out about peer tutoring if the information is not readily available on the school website.
New York Public Library’s Free Tutoring (Brainfuse)
Students (kindergarten-college students) and adults are able to get free one-on-one academic support from certified teachers from 2 p.m. to 11 p.m. daily, as long as they have a free library card. They can log on here on their computer or download the Brainfuse app on their phone.
The support is available in:
English and Spanish
All core subjects, including advanced classes (ex: Calculus II)
Specialized topics (ex: Organic Chemistry, Physics, and Statistics)
Standardized testing (SAT or ACT)
Essay editing
FAFSA Application
Foreign language learning classes or English as Second Language
Adult education (U.S. citizenship test, GED preparation)
Students can join an on-call session without making an appointment. They can also make an appointment, and they are able to request a specific teacher so they continue working with the same teacher as before.
Dial-A-Teacher
Students in kindergarten through 12th grade are able to call a homework support hotline 212-777-3380 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday to receive support in English, math, and social sciences from certified teachers who work as full-time classroom teachers during the day.
Students can text or email a photo of their homework to the teachers while on the phone. Unlike Brainfuse, students are not able to share their work via a photo or use a whiteboard.
